Low Back Pain is a common complaint in todays world. It is the second most common neurological complaint. It is estimated that 31 million people will experience back pain this year, so you are not alone. In my practice, I see many forms of back pain and treat it very successfully because I look for the cause and not just treat the pain.
The first step is to identify where the pain is? Then, what the pain feels like? Then I want to know how severe it is and when is it the worst? What can you do to relieve it? These are a partial list of questions we ask to get to the cause of the pain. As I said, there are many causes of low back pain, lets see if yours is in the list:
- Trauma - An injury or overuse to the area
- Visceral Pain - pain coming from an organ that is overworked(ie. the kidney)
- Muscle Strain - maybe injury related, may not be. (bending over to brush teeth)
- Disease Process - Kidney infection, fibromyalgia, prostate problems, you get the idea.
- Nutritional Deficiency - Yes, low intake of certain nutrients can cause low back pain.
- Neurological Process - Compression of the nerve or blood supply to the low back area. (Sciatica, peripheral nerve or artery disease)
This is a partial list just to let you know that it can be more than just "a pulled muscle". One of the largest reasons for low back pain that I see is related to a Visceral referral area or kidney referral. So lets look at how we can relieve pain in this situation.
Okay, so we have done our history and it is determined through examination that your low back pain is caused by an overworked kidney system. In Chinese medicine, the kidney or any organ system has a meridian or energy line that runs through the body like an extension cord. It usually will run through the organ sometimes not. In any case, the pain or problem can be in the organ or anywhere on the meridian line. Most cases of low back pain related to the kidneys you will feel in the kidney or flank area. That is why I ask specifically where the pain is, in this case more on the sides(flanks) than the central spine area.
Treating a situation like this one involves limiting the things that irritate the kidney
- coffee
- soda
- chocolate
Then increasing things to strengthen the the kidney system
- 1/2 your body weight in water
- proper calcium for your body with Vit. D
- Vit. E
There are some pressure or reflex points for the patient to "rub" at home, 1-2 minutes 3x per day.
These points are safe to use even if the problem isn't related to the kidney. Believe me when you find them you will know! You will have to usually have someone else rub these points at first since you cannot get to your foot due to pain. Ask them to be gentle it will be very sore.
Following the advice above should at least relieve your low back pain within a couple of days. If not, send me an email or post to my comments and see if I can help.

I am curious regarding pain in the sciatic nerve. Is it an indication of nerve damage made by an injury or damage to an internal organ?

If you have back pain, the first step is to be properly assessed by your primary care provider. Back pain has many causes, from muscle strain to more serious conditions such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spondylosisthesis, osteoporosis, or a tumor, so it's important to find out what is causing the back pain.
